As data centres become increasingly critical to the global economy, ensuring uninterrupted power is paramount. With uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) at the heart of the critical power path, the choice of battery technology plays a key role in improving resilience, lowering operational costs, and enhancing uptime.

Uninterruptible power supplies have several consumable parts of which the battery set is the costliest requiring replacement at least once or twice during its working life. What costs should you take into consideration when deciding whether to replace your UPS batteries or upgrade to a new UPS system?

Over 80% of all uninterruptible power supply service issues are battery related. UPS batteries age whether in use or in storage. This is because a battery stores electrical energy using a chemical process and their working life is dependent upon a number of factors including: charge/discharge cycles, operational temperature, charging technique and their overall design and build quality.

Batteries are one of the most expensive consumables in an AC or DC uninterruptible power supply and so it makes sense to protect your investment as best you can. Whilst most UPS systems will test their overall battery health, sometimes the testing is not extensive enough to identify individual battery blocks within a battery string that can be close to failure or have an internal fault.

Lead acid batteries have limited capabilities when it comes to frequent energy storage and discharge cycles and are more suited to standby power applications. Applications including electric vehicles and mobile computing applications also required an energy storage mechanism that could cope with rapid charge/recharge cycles and offer a longer working life. Lithium-ion batteries represent a technology that can disrupt the traditional data centre UPS market place and its reliance on valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries. Other energy storage technologies have tried to disrupt this market place, including super capacitors and DC flywheels. The benefits of lithium-ion (li-ion) batteries mean that this new battery technology is rapidly gaining acceptance and disrupting other traditional industries including transportation and grid-scale energy storage.
