For data centres and server rooms, generators can be installed upstream of their uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to provide the UPS with a source of long runtime power. This type of power protection device combination reduces the size of the UPS battery set.

There is often confusion as to the roles played by UPS systems and generators in critical power protection plans. This is more so now that lithium-ion batteries are also turning uninterruptible power supplies into what are now termed as energy storage systems. What’s the key differences between a UPS and generator?

The way that we are using energy is changing. Hybrid cars are just one example where traditional petrol and diesel engines are combined with lithium-ion batteries to provide a more environmentally friendly form of transportation. Today, new battery and energy storage technologies and advances in on-site power generation allow a server room or data centre to adopt a greener power solution, with lower emissions and one that could be more sustainable in the future.

Generators provide mechanically generated electrical power by converting a fuel source including diesel, liquid petroleum gas or bio-fuels in electrical energy. The generators we most commonly use within a UPS installation are used on what is known as a standby power mode. The alternative to this is prime power mode where the generator is run continuously. Each type of use must be sized correctly if the generator is to be able to provide the power required, for the runtime required and to provide this for a reasonable operating and working life.

There are times when designing a backup power plan that our projects team will recommend a UPS system combined with a standby power generator. There are several differences between these two devices and whilst an uninterruptible power supply can be used without a generator to protect IT servers and network devices, a generator cannot provide the same level of protection in terms of a break-free and as pure an output supply.

Generators and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) are designed to provide back-up power when the mains power supply fails or fluctuates wildly. There is a principle difference between how these two power protection devices achieve this and it lies in the generation and storage of the energy they provide.

The electricity utilities continue to invest in their critical infrastructure to ensure that power outages are quickly identified and corrected.
