FAQs - Network IP Cameras

Information on IP and network cameras used to monitor computer rooms, server rooms, remote buildings and data centres.

The IP in IP camera stands for Internet Protocol. An IP camera connects to a local area network via an Ethernet cable, via a built-in RJ45 Ethernet port or through a Wireless Access Point (WAP) to the Wi-Fi network. An IP camera is typically PoE (Power over Ethernet) powered via an Ethernet cable and suitable PoE injector or PoE enabled network switch or router.

An IP camera can be installed to monitor a computer room, server room or space within a data centre. The camera will require an Ethernet connection, preferably cabled, a network switch and power supply. If Power over Ethernet (PoE0 powered the camera will require a PoE network switch or PoE injector. If AC powered the camera will need an AC power adaptor and one that is preferably powered from an uninterruptible power supply.

Most IP network cameras will store data on built-in memory cards. Some may be removable. If there is no local memory storage, the video stream and images will be stored on a Network Video Recorder (NVR) either connected locally or over an Ethernet network.
